Data Engineer Lead
VetFamily
🚀 We're Looking for a Data Engineer Lead Who Thrives on Autonomy and Impact
At VetFamily, we’re reimagining how data engineering drives intelligence and innovation in the veterinary industry. We’re seeking a Data Engineer Lead who combines deep technical skills with strong leadership instincts—someone who can design scalable data architectures, guide engineering direction, and empower cross-functional teams to turn data into decisions.
This is a role for a hands-on leader who is as comfortable writing SQL and orchestrating pipelines as they are setting strategy and mentoring others. You’ll have the independence to make architecture decisions, prioritize strategically, and shape how data fuels our products and platform. You’ll also be encouraged to collaborate widely—gathering input from product managers, analysts, and business stakeholders—to ensure our data systems serve real-world needs.
🌍 About the Role
As a Data Engineer Lead at VetFamily, you will play a key role in modernizing and scaling our global data platform - one that processes billions in transactions across EMEA, the US, and Asia. You’ll take ownership of the technical direction, ensuring the platform’s performance, reliability, and scalability support our rapidly growing ecosystem of clinics, suppliers, and partners. You will coordinate between our Commercial team, Data Scientists and Data Engineers and external partners.
Our data stack is modern and evolving: API/sFPT, Airflow, python, AWS s3 & rds, DBT, Snowflake, Power BI and Metabase. You’ll influence how we evolve this architecture to deliver robust data products, streamline data flow, and enable advanced analytics and AI applications across the company as we growth.
💡 What You’ll Do
- Lead Data Architecture & Strategy – Define and evolve our data architecture to ensure scalability, consistency, and performance across products and teams. A eye for details is needed, the high level vision will be clear, but you need to translate that and lead the team in detailed technical decisions. Envision and enforce the naming convention, policies and architecture in the daily work
- Pipeline Ownership – Design, implement, and optimize ETL/ELT pipelines using DBT, Airflow, python and AWS components.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration – Work closely with product, data, and engineering teams to gather requirements and translate them into robust, maintainable solutions.
- Technical Leadership – Mentor team members, establish best practices, and promote engineering excellence and data reliability.
- Stakeholder Partnership – Engage with business and technical stakeholders to understand priorities, clarify goals, and ensure alignment across functions.
- Decision-Making & Autonomy – Drive initiatives independently, make informed trade-offs, and balance delivery speed with technical rigor.
- AI-Enhanced Productivity – Use modern tools like ChatGPT, Cody, or Cursor to accelerate development, documentation, and troubleshooting.
🧠 About You
- You have strong experience designing and managing modern data architectures in cloud environments (AWS preferred).
- Deep expertise in SQL, Python, DBT, and data warehousing solutions such as Snowflake.
- Proven ability to lead data initiatives end-to-end—from discovery and design to deployment and maintenance.
- Strong understanding of data modeling, ETL frameworks, and DevOps practices for data.
- Excellent communication skills—you can explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders clearly.
- You thrive in autonomy but are humble enough to seek advice and input when needed.
- You bring strategic thinking combined with hands-on problem-solving.
- Experience mentoring others or leading small teams is a strong plus.
